About Seattle University

Founded in 1891, Seattle University is a private institution. The campus is 50 acres in size, it is located in an urban area, and there are 4,301 students enrolled in total (fall 2021). The academic calendar is based on quarters.

Seattle University is a Jesuit school located in the city’s First Hill and Capitol Hill neighborhoods. Undergraduate students must live in dorms for their first two years and can choose from more than 60 majors. Seattle offers more than 30 graduate programs, such as those at The Albers School of Business & Economics and the School of Law, which is highly ranked in the field of legal writing.

As a faith-based school, Seattle has four chapels and several “sacred places” where students can go to think and pray. Two-thirds of the students volunteer, and some of them work with the Children’s Literacy Project, which sends tutors to schools in Seattle. Students can also join clubs or take part in intramural or intercollegiate sports. There are more than 15 Seattle Redhawks teams in NCAA Division I, and they play in different conferences. Jim Whittaker, who was the first American to reach the top of Mount Everest, is a famous alumnus.

According to U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools 2020” ranking, postgraduate programs in business and law continue to be among the best of their kind in the country. The following three Albers School of Business and Economics programs are listed in the rankings:

  • The Executive MBA program is the top-ranked EMBA program in the Northwest and the fourth highest on the West Coast, and it is ranked #17 nationally.
  • The accounting program is ranked #2 in the Northwest and #24 nationally.
  • The finance program is ranked #2 in the Northwest and #28 nationally.

The three top-ranked School of Law programs are:

  • Legal writing is ranked #3 in the U.S. and is always in the top 5 for legal specialties.
  • The clinical training program is ranked #20 nationwide and #1 among law schools in the Northwest.
  • The part-time law program is ranked #2 in the Northwest and West Coast and #27 nationally.

College Factual’s rankings for 2022 put Seattle University in the top 5 of all schools in Washington and in the top 15% of all schools in the United States. Many of Seattle University’s scholastic programs received top 15% or better rankings from College Factual, including the following:
