What Is Canvas For Students?
Canvas Student allows students to access their courses and groups using mobile devices. Students can submit assignments, participate in discussions, and view grades and course materials. The app also provides access to class calendars, to-dos, notifications and conversation messages.
Instructure, Inc. was created to support the ongoing development of a learning management system known as Canvas or Canvas LMS (formally Instructure); after the merger, the founders changed the name of the software from Instructure to Canvas. The Utah-based company tested the learning management system at several local schools, including Utah State University and Brigham Young University, before officially launching the system.
Some schools use Canvas to allow students to easily submit assignments, answer discussions, access and upload media using Canvas Studio, and retrieve content from their Google Drive after linking Canvas with their Google Account.
Like students, Canvas allows teachers to create assignments, discussions, pages, and modules. Instructors can even integrate supported external tools or see what students think about their courses; this is called the “Student View”. As of 2020, approximately 4,000 institutions around the world use Canvas.
Instructure launched the Canvas iOS app in 2011, followed shortly thereafter by the Canvas Android app in 2013, enabling mobile access to the platform. The apps are divided into three sections: Canvas Student, Canvas Teacher, and Canvas Parent.
Canvas Student allows students to access Canvas’ student features, Canvas Teacher, similar to Student, allows teachers to access Canvas’ teacher features, and Canvas Parent allows parents of K-12 students to stay informed about their child’s assignments, grades, and overall schooling, all linked to the website functions are similar.
In August 2020, 16 U.S. states confirmed partnerships with Instructure to adopt its Canvas platform for their educational institutions. States say they hope to provide stronger support for students and educators by adopting Canvas as a statewide solution to the challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
